Chancellor Friedrich Merz announces plans for a more assertive German military role in response to geopolitical threats.
In a recent address to the Bundestag, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the necessity for Germany to adopt a significantly more active and decisive stance on the global stage, particularly regarding the defense of Europe against Russian aggression.
Merz articulated a commitment to supporting peace efforts, while cautioning that the West must not acquiesce to a 'dictated peace' or accept the 'status quo imposed by force' by Russia.
The Chancellor highlighted the importance of transatlantic unity, acknowledging the support of U.S. President
Donald Trump for initiatives aimed at halting the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
"It is crucial that the political West does not allow for disunity.
I will strive to maintain the highest possible unity among our European and American partners," stated Merz.
He further noted that the outcome of the conflict in Ukraine is significant not just for the fate of the nation itself, but will also determine whether the rule of law and the international order can persist in Europe and the wider world or if tyranny, military force, and the law of the strongest will prevail.
In the latter part of his speech, Merz shifted focus to internal security and Germany's defense capabilities.
He announced plans for systemic expansion and financial reinforcement of the Bundeswehr, asserting the aim of establishing it as the 'strongest conventional military force in Europe.'
"We want to be in a position to defend ourselves so that we never have to defend ourselves again," Merz remarked, adding that 'strength deters, weakness invites aggression.' This pronouncement received applause from the assembled Bundestag representatives.
Merz clarified that such a military capability is 'nothing less than appropriate' for the most populous and economically powerful country in Europe.
