Melissa Hortman and her spouse shot in a targeted act of political violence, with Senator John Hoffman critically injured.
In a tragic incident in Minnesota, Democratic Congresswoman Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot dead, while Senator John Hoffman was critically wounded in what authorities are describing as a targeted political attack in the suburbs of Minneapolis.
Governor Tim Walz confirmed the details during a press conference, indicating that the violence appeared to be politically motivated.
The shootings occurred at the homes of the victims, with Congresswoman Hortman killed in Brooklyn Park while Senator Hoffman was shot in Champlin.
Governor Walz reported that Senator Hoffman, aged 60, and his wife sustained multiple gunshot wounds and have undergone surgery in an effort to save their lives.
Walz expressed cautious optimism regarding Hoffman's chances of survival in what authorities are treating as an assassination attempt.
Chief of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Drew Evans, stated that law enforcement encountered a suspect who was disguised as a police officer, complete with a tactical vest and badge, as he exited his residence following Hoffman’s shooting.
The suspect allegedly fired upon responding police officers and managed to flee the scene on foot, leaving behind a vehicle that resembled a police car parked in the driveway of Congresswoman Hortman’s residence.
Authorities later discovered a list in the suspect's vehicle, which contained the names of other potential targets, including several legislators.
In response to these developments, security forces have been dispatched to protect individuals identified on this list.
Reports indicate that the armed individual targeted Democratic Congress members by knocking on doors and demanding victims come outside.
President
Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident, expressing through press secretary Caroline Levitt that such acts of violence are intolerable.
Minnesota Attorney General Pam Bondi stated she is closely monitoring the situation following what appears to be a deliberate assault on a Congress member and the senator.
Additionally, Deputy Director of the FBI, Dan Bongino, confirmed that the bureau is fully engaged on the ground in Minnesota.
In the wake of the shootings, police have urged residents in two Minneapolis suburbs to remain indoors as the search for the suspect, dressed as a police officer, is initiated.
Governor Walz announced the activation of Minnesota's Emergency Operations Center, pledging to provide local police with all necessary state resources.
