New SMS Scam Targeting Serbian Citizens Promises Package Delivery Updates

Fraudulent messages impersonating Serbian postal service request sensitive information from recipients.
Residents of Serbia are currently facing a new wave of SMS scams, with messages purportedly from the national postal service, "Pošta Srbije," warning recipients about undeliverable packages due to incomplete address information.

The messages caution that immediate action is required to modify delivery details, urging recipients to click on a provided link.

The scam messages typically read: "Pošta Srbije: We inform you that your package has arrived at our warehouse, but we cannot deliver it due to incomplete addressing.

Please update your delivery information and submit a request for modification so that we can continue your delivery.

Enter the link below for changes.

Please do this within the next 12 hours to avoid unnecessary complications."

As online shopping continues to surge, such scams exploit consumer anxiety regarding package deliveries.

For individuals who are not currently expecting any shipments, these messages may trigger immediate suspicion.

Nevertheless, those awaiting deliveries could be more susceptible to falling victim to this fraudulent scheme.

An important indicator of the scam's authenticity is the language used in the text.

Phrasing such as "how we can continue your delivery" indicates that the message may originate from abroad, potentially involving the use of translation technology, which can result in awkward constructs that serve as a red flag for recipients.

Additionally, the sender’s phone number is registered as foreign, specifically from Chile, denoted by the country code +56. This aspect raises further doubts about the legitimacy of the communication.

In a worrying development, the sophistication of the scammers appears to be evolving, as they reportedly create group chats to engage potential victims further.

Some individuals have already disclosed personal data in response to these SMS messages rather than clicking on potentially harmful links, which could have exposed them to greater data theft risks.

Cybersecurity experts caution against messages that invoke urgency or suggest time constraints, as seen in this incident where recipients are instructed to act within 12 hours.

They advise that any recipient harboring doubts should independently verify the claims by contacting the official delivery service's customer support.

Authorities continue to alert the public about this and similar scams, emphasizing the importance of vigilance when receiving unsolicited communications that require personal information.
