Polish Parliament Votes Confidence in Donald Tusk's Government

The pro-European coalition government led by Donald Tusk secures parliamentary support following a contentious electoral period.
WARSAW – The Polish Parliament today voted to grant confidence to the pro-European coalition government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, following the recent presidential elections in which his Civic Coalition was defeated.

Rafal Trzaskowski, representing Tusk's Civic Coalition, lost to nationalist candidate Karol Nawrocki in a runoff held on June 1, leading to mutual accusations among smaller partners in the coalition government and raising concerns regarding the future of the administration.

Tusk’s coalition holds 242 seats in the lower house, known as the Sejm, out of 460, making it anticipated that they would survive the confidence vote.

"We have a mandate to take full responsibility for what happens in Poland.

Governing Poland is a privilege," Tusk stated during the parliamentary debate prior to the confidence vote.

Tusk outlined increased defense spending and a reduction in the number of visas issued to migrants as key achievements since he assumed office in December 2023, succeeding the nationalist Law and Justice Party (PiS), which backed Nawrocki.

He pledged that his government would continue efforts to repeal judicial reforms enacted by PiS, which the European Union claims undermine judicial independence.

Outgoing Polish President Andrzej Duda, also an ally of PiS, has thus far blocked the government's attempts to overturn these judicial reforms.

Tusk also announced that the government would hold accountable those linked to the previous PiS administration who are suspected of misconduct.

PiS MP Jacek Sasin accused Tusk and his team of incompetence and spreading lies.

"Remove these lazy and harmful people from power before they completely destroy everything!" he asserted.

Analysts indicate that many Polish voters are disillusioned with the government's failure to fulfill its promises, including the liberalization of abortion laws, judicial reform, and increasing the threshold at which Poles start paying taxes.

Newly elected President Nawrocki stated in an interview with the daily "Głos Gazety Prawnej" that he would sign a law increasing the tax exemption threshold, adding that he would personally propose such legislation if the government did not.

He expressed his intention to fulfill 100 promises made by the government within the first 100 days, stating, "Isn't that reconciliatory?"
