Controversial Nazi Symbols Emerge in Serbia Amid Political Tensions

Public displays of Nazi symbols provoke outrage and legal scrutiny following President Vučić's remarks.
In Serbia, recent public displays of Nazi symbols have ignited controversy and raised legal questions, particularly following remarks made by President Aleksandar Vučić.

The incidents occurred after a protest slogan, 'Bolje ćaci, nego naci' (Better a Chetnik than a Nazi), was promoted by Vučić in response to an attack on a student in Belgrade.

The slogan and associated Nazi symbols were displayed prominently in several locations.

On Friday, a banner with the slogan and a swastika was displayed above the entrance to Niš Fortress.

The following day, a similar banner was unfurled along King Alexander Boulevard near the National Assembly in Belgrade.

In this instance, the swastika was depicted within a red circle and crossed out.

Additionally, antisemitic graffiti and Nazi symbols were reported to be painted on various monuments in the Jewish cemetery in Zemun over the weekend.

The Ministry for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue condemned the vandalism, calling it obscene defacement of memorials.

According to Serbian law, particularly the Law on the Prohibition of Manifestations of Neo-Nazi or Fascist Organizations, individuals displaying Nazi symbols can face fines ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 dinars.

Those who produce, distribute, or store such symbols face penalties of between 100,000 and 1,000,000 dinars.

Despite these legal provisions, no officials have publicly commented on the banners displayed in Niš and Belgrade.

Attempts to remove the banner in Belgrade were made by members of the National Movement of Serbia, Ivana Rokvić and Ana Jakovljević, but they were confronted by a group of young men chanting 'Who does not jump is a Nazi.' An altercation occurred, with reports indicating that the two women were doused with water and verbally assaulted by unidentified individuals.

Although police did not intervene during the incident, they later detained Rokvić outside the Serbian Assembly, where a misdemeanor claim against her was filed.

President Vučić's statement, which sparked this recent wave of controversy, was part of his reaction to the student assault, indicating the political climate surrounding these incidents and the rising tensions in society regarding nationalism and historical commemoration.
