France and Belgium, two of the largest importers of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the European Union, have publicly indicated their opposition to the EU's plan to completely halt Russian gas purchases by 2027. Both nations are seeking further assurances regarding the economic and legal ramifications of such a significant measure before making a determination on their support.

French Energy Minister Marc Ferači stated that France would favor a strategy that focuses on securing alternative energy supplies instead of outright cessation of Russian gas imports.

He referenced the French government's plans to replace Russian gas with imports from Qatar, emphasizing the importance of diversifying energy sources within Europe.

Currently, approximately 97% of the EU's LNG imports from Russia are sourced from four countries: France, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Last year, these nations collectively imported 16.77 million tons of Russian LNG, which accounts for more than half of Moscow's global gas exports.

To substantiate their energy needs, the four countries expended over six billion euros on fuel purchases from Russia.

For Spain and the Netherlands, which rank as the third and fourth largest purchasers of Russian LNG in the EU respectively, the proposed European Union plans to restrict imports present an opportunity to sever their energy ties with Russia.

This shift aligns with broader objectives of energy security and diversification across the continent.

The European Commission is expected to deliberate on the potential ban of Russian gas and nuclear fuel by the end of 2027 in June.

However, Hungary and Slovakia may attempt to obstruct such a decision, reflecting the complexities and differing positions within the EU regarding energy policy and dependence on Russian resources.
