New Highway Set to Transform Serbia's Infrastructure

The Pakovraće–Požega highway section is nearing completion, with an official opening scheduled for June 28.
The Pakovraće–Požega highway, measuring approximately 19.5 kilometers, has entered its final construction phase, with the official inauguration expected on June 28. This segment traverses the challenging hilly and mountainous terrain of western Serbia and is regarded as one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the country over the past decade.

This section is an extension of the "Miloš Veliki" highway, which is part of Corridor E-763 and connects Belgrade with the southern and western parts of the country, ultimately linking to the Adriatic coast.

The previous segment from Preljina near Čačak to Pakovraće, which is about 11.5 kilometers long, was opened to traffic in January 2022. This roadway has alleviated long-standing traffic congestion in Čačak, especially during summer vacations and weekends.

Finance Minister Siniša Mali announced that the state has mobilized extensive resources from Serbia's construction industry for the EXPO project.

He stated, "In 3.5 years, we need to complete something that is completely new and different.

However, it is particularly important that the Expo is not just in Belgrade, but across all of Serbia." He further emphasized the upcoming inauguration of 20 kilometers of new highway from Pakovraće to Požega on Vidovdan, June 28. Additionally, he announced the opening of 25 kilometers of the Danube highway by the end of the year, from Požarevac towards Golubac, and 14 kilometers of the Morava Corridor from Vrbe to Vrnjačka Banja.

The opening of this highway segment will significantly shorten travel time, reduce congestion on existing regional roads, and enhance traffic safety.

Travel to Zlatibor will take approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The route will feature two notable tunnels—Tunnel "Laz," over 2.8 kilometers long, and Tunnel "Munjino Brdo," of similar length— along with several bridges and viaducts designed to accommodate the complex terrain of western Serbia.

With the Pakovraće–Požega section opening, the "Miloš Veliki" highway will extend to the gates of Užice, marking an important step towards the future realization of the Adriatic Corridor, which will connect Serbia with Montenegro and the port of Bar.

The expected impact of this development is an impetus for tourism and economic growth in the Moravički and Zlatiborski districts.

Residents will gain faster and easier access to tourist centers such as Zlatibor, Tara, Zlatar, Drina, and Uvac, while investors will benefit from stable and reliable infrastructure for business development.
