Protests Erupt in Kosjerić Following Election Commission's Rejection of Repeat Vote Request

Students and citizens rally against the local election authority’s dismissal of an opposition list's appeal regarding voting irregularities.
A protest involving students and local citizens is currently taking place outside the Municipal Building in Kosjerić.

Demonstrators plan to march towards the headquarters of the opposition group 'United for Kosjerić' following the municipal election commission's recent rejection of the opposition's request to repeat elections at a contested polling station.

The call for the protest was initiated by the student body after the Municipal Election Commission denied the appeal from the 'United for Kosjerić' list concerning alleged irregularities that occurred during the elections held on June 8. Students supporting this list had previously set up tents outside the Municipal Building, which were removed prior to the protest.

Their initial demands included access to election materials and the repetition of elections at polling station number 25.

Slavoljub Kosorić, a representative of the 'United for Kosjerić' list, stated that the municipal election authority's decision amounted to 'legal violence' and indicated plans to pursue legal action.

The opposition party was granted access to election materials at one polling station, where they identified three irregularities, notably the voting of an individual not registered on the voter list.

Consequently, the election commission is expected to annul the votes from this station due to this infraction.

Polling station number 25 is pivotal in determining the overall winner of the local elections, with 434 eligible voters potentially impacting the final outcome.

The opposition's appeal is particularly focused on the results from this location because they reported voting irregularities, including the presence of unauthorized voters.

Preliminary election results showed that the 'United for Kosjerić' list was trailing by a narrow margin of just 51 votes behind the Serbian Progressive Party.

Despite the identification of irregularities, the opposition submitted just one appeal due to time constraints and limitations imposed on their access to election materials—permitted access was granted at only 13 out of 29 polling places.

Should the election commission uphold its decision to reject the appeal, the opposition has a window of 72 hours to file an appeal with the Higher Court.

An independent monitoring organization has reviewed the election commission's decision and found that it improperly assessed the factual circumstances, leading to a flawed conclusion.
