Six Women Murdered in Serbia in Less Than Three Months Amid Rising Concerns of Domestic Violence

Four of the six victims were killed by their sons in a disturbing trend of femicide.
In the first three months of 2023, Serbia has reported six cases of femicide, revealing a troubling pattern of domestic violence.

In four out of the six incidents, the perpetrators were the sons of the victims.

The latest incident occurred in the town of Čačak, where a man named Mihailo B. allegedly murdered his mother, Milica, and father, Jovan, on the night of March 8. It is reported that the son, who had been visiting his parents daily, used a sharp object in the attack before fleeing the scene.

The crime was discovered when Mihailo's wife, unable to reach him or his parents by phone, visited their home and found the door locked.

In a state of panic, she sought help from neighbors, who assisted her in calling the police and emergency services.

First responders, including firefighters, entered through a window and found the couple's bodies.

Mihailo was apprehended three hours later in the village of Svračkovci near Gornji Milanovac.

A previous murder just six days earlier involved a 66-year-old man, Miodrag M., who confessed to strangling his former partner, Dragana V., in the courtyard of their shared residence in Smederevo.

Miodrag reportedly acted out of frustration over a financial dispute.

After the crime, Miodrag fled the scene but was quickly caught by the police in Lugavčina, where he is thought to have gone to avoid arrest.

Dragana's daughter found her mother's body, but responders could only confirm her death upon arrival.

Another victim, Ema T., was reported missing for three days before her body was discovered hidden under leaves in a forest on March 8 in the village of Paljevo.

Ahmedin P., a 59-year-old, has been arrested in connection with her death, having failed to report the incident or call for assistance despite later claiming to have attempted resuscitation.

On February 2, M. K., a 21-year-old, allegedly fatally stabbed his mother after a quarrel that escalated when he began throwing furniture from their apartment's terrace.

The victim was known in the community as a nurse.

Her death was discovered by neighbors who reported the dispute to the police, finding her unresponsive at the scene.

Reports indicate that the accused had a history of psychological issues and substance abuse.

Another incident occurred on January 28, involving David J., who is suspected of beating his mother, Jelena Đ., a 62-year-old academic and anthropologist, to death.

Following the incident, David voluntarily reported the crime to the police.

Authorities noted concerns about his mental state, leading to his transfer to a psychiatric facility for evaluation.

The first reported femicide of the year took place on January 8 in Srbobran, where 69-year-old Mirjana R. was found dead in her home with multiple injuries.

Her son, Marton R., was arrested shortly after, and it was revealed that he had previous incidents of domestic violence.

Neighbors recounted that Marton had been suffering from alcohol addiction and had a history of abusing his mother.

These incidents highlight ongoing issues related to domestic violence and femicide in Serbia, triggering public discourse about the prevalence of such violence and the effectiveness of existing legal measures aimed at protecting victims.
