Alarming Incident at a Belgrade School Leads to Police Investigation

Authorities intervene after a student allegedly threatens school staff, prompting a series of protective measures.
The Belgrade Higher Public Prosecutor's Office announced today that the police conducted an interview with a seventh-grade student from the "Jovan Sterija Popović" elementary school in New Belgrade, accompanied by his mother.

This action followed reports from two female students who claimed the boy stated he "has a gun and will kill some teachers."

In response to the incident, the prosecutor's office informed the police, which subsequently initiated a thorough investigation.

Following the interview, authorities ordered the student to be evaluated at an appropriate facility for relevant medical examinations.

Additionally, a search of the student's home was conducted, revealing no firearm present.

The prosecutor's statement clarified that reports regarding the existence of a "list" of intended targets circulating in the media were inaccurate.

The case is currently under the supervision of the Social Welfare Center.

Initial reports indicated that the student may have also brought a knife to school and generated a list, raising further concerns about potential threats.

Dejan Pavković, the school's director, confirmed that the institution became aware on Tuesday of the student’s remarks about wanting to "repeat 'Ribnikar'"—a reference to a previous tragic shooting incident in Serbia—and that he allegedly possessed a list of students targeted for Friday.

Following these revelations, immediate action was taken.

Pavković stated that the student was sent home in the company of a family member and that a suspension from classes was recommended.

He emphasized the school’s prompt response, detailing that the student’s mother was notified, and a meeting of the Violence, Abuse, and Neglect Protection Team was convened to assess the situation.

A recommendation for the student's suspension from all educational activities was made, alongside the initiation of disciplinary proceedings.

Pavković noted that law enforcement, the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office, and the Social Welfare Center were all informed and involved in the case.

The student had previously received support from external agencies due to related circumstances.

Parents of students at the school were also notified of the measures taken to ensure safety.
