Art Academy Assistant Released from Misdemeanor Court After Arrest in Novi Sad

Veroljub Naumović faces allegations of removing a state flag during protests, but claims innocence.
Veroljub Naumović, an assistant at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, was released from the Misdemeanor Court after being detained earlier today.

He is accused of removing the Serbian state flag from the premises of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) during a protest in the city.

Naumović reported that law enforcement officials arrived at his residence, stating they were acting on a directive from the Misdemeanor Court.

After being given the opportunity to change clothes, he was taken to a police station in Detelinara.

He mentioned that he was not interrogated at the station; rather, he was presented with documents outlining the charges against him, which he refused to sign.

Following this, he was transferred to the Misdemeanor Court.

The allegations against Naumović include that he disrupted public order by removing the flag of the Republic of Serbia from the party's premises.

While Naumović maintains that he did not take down the flag, he acknowledged his awareness of the situation that unfolded during the protests.

He clarified that students and faculty members were securing a protest march that culminated on Bulevar.

Following this event, a crowd gathered outside the offices from which alleged assailants had emerged earlier this year to attack student Ana, resulting in her sustaining a broken jaw.

Naumović noted that attendees were visibly agitated.

Some students from the crowd proceeded to remove the Serbian flags, as it was reported that others were preparing to throw eggs at the building.

He emphasized that the intention was not to desecrate the national flag or the country.

In the Misdemeanor Court, Naumović was informed that security camera footage from the party's premises had captured the incident, and law enforcement officials had identified him as a suspect.

However, he stated that he had not been officially identified during the year, raising questions about how he was specifically identified.

Naumović expressed his uncertainty regarding the identification process, highlighting that he had not been legitimized previously this year or in past years.

He asserted that the footage in question appeared to be low quality and handheld, which he argued undermined its legitimacy.

He indicated that the details on the video were insufficient for accurate identification as the individual depicted wore a hat and sunglasses.

In addition to Naumović, another individual, Miloš Jocić from the Faculty of Philosophy, was also detained earlier this morning in Novi Sad.
