Corruption Crackdown: Arrests of High-Profile Officials and Businessmen in Serbia

A series of arrests, including a former director of Serbia's electricity company and prominent businessmen, highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption.
In a significant law enforcement operation conducted on October 13, 2023, Serbian police arrested multiple individuals, including Milorad Grčić, the former acting director of Electric Power Industry of Serbia (EPS), and notable businessman Aleksandar Papić.

A total of 15 people were detained on suspicion of various corruption-related offenses.

The arrested individuals are accused of numerous crimes, including abuse of office, money laundering, bribery, and influence peddling.

Grčić and his associates allegedly manipulated public procurement processes during their tenure, causing EPS financial damage exceeding 100 million Serbian dinars (approximately €850,000).

According to a statement by Nenad Stefanović, the Chief Prosecutor of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade, the investigations suggest that the suspects exploited their official positions between 2018 and 2021 to embezzle funds, which they subsequently funneled into legal financial channels.

The arrests were part of a broader initiative announced by Serbian authorities aimed at combating systemic corruption.

This operation follows statements from President Aleksandar Vučić earlier this year, indicating a rigorous approach to tackling corruption across various sectors in Serbia.

The police operation included raids at multiple locations associated with the arrested individuals.

Reports indicate that substantial amounts of cash, luxury watches, jewelry, and illegal weapons were seized during these searches.

Among those detained were executives from EPS and the management team of the Football Club Borac from Lazarevac, raising questions about potential financial irregularities linked to club financing from EPS.

Investigators are looking into whether substantial funds allocated to the football club were misappropriated.

Further inquiries have been announced, with a focus on fraudulent procurement processes allegedly involving inflated costs for technical equipment, all documented under the guise of legitimate contracts.

The ongoing investigation is expected to span several months, with authorities suggesting that more arrests may follow.

As this situation unfolds, the involved parties are in custody under orders for a maximum temporary detention period of 48 hours, after which they are to be formally charged.
