Extreme Cold Weather Alerts Issued Across Serbia

Extreme Cold Weather Alerts Issued Across Serbia

National Meteorological Service warns of dangerously low temperatures and potential impacts.
Serbia is bracing for a significant drop in temperatures as the National Meteorological Service (RHMZ) has issued alerts due to extreme cold conditions.

Predicted minimum air temperatures are expected to range from -7 to 0 degrees Celsius at 2 meters above ground level, with surface temperatures dropping to as low as -9 degrees Celsius.

In mountainous regions, temperatures may approach or fall below -10 degrees Celsius.

Morning conditions will be particularly harsh for this time of year, with weak to moderate frost expected in lowland areas, while strong frost conditions are predicted in mountainous regions.

During the daytime, weather will trend towards partly cloudy with sunny intervals, remaining dry in most areas, although light snow may occasionally fall in hilly and mountainous regions.

Temperatures across Serbia are anticipated to peak between 6 and 12 degrees Celsius.

In Belgrade, potential rainfall in the form of showers is forecasted, with a minimum temperature of -1 degree and a maximum projected at 10 degrees.

Due to the extreme cold, RHMZ has activated yellow and orange meteorological alerts.

The first level of warning indicates potentially dangerous weather conditions and is applicable to Vojvodina, Belgrade, western Serbia, Šumadija, Pomoravlje, and eastern Serbia.

Areas above 1,000 meters elevation are expected to experience minimum temperatures below -5 degrees Celsius.

The agency has noted the potential for unexpected climatic phenomena to affect the region.

A further weather advisory warns of significant cooling as a cold air mass approaches Serbia, intensifying weather warnings across the country.

In the afternoon and evening hours of April 8, transient cloudiness with brief precipitation in the form of rain and snow is anticipated to sweep down from the north, with winds expected to be light to moderate, coming from the northwest.

Meteorologists have cautioned that the anticipated minimum temperatures are not unusual; however, preparations for outdoor activities are advised.

Advisory mentions the dangers of cold air lakes that could lead to issues such as interruptions in heating and electricity supply, the risk of frozen taps and water installations, and adverse conditions for individuals with chronic illnesses, medical treatments, or those sensitive to weather changes.

The second level of dangerous weather warnings applies to southeastern and southwestern Serbia, where temperatures above 1,000 meters may drop below -10 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists emphasized the potential for serious weather situations persisting for several consecutive days, which could threaten lives and livelihoods, disrupt heating and electricity supplies, cause transportation problems, and result in damages in forestry and other weather-dependent economic sectors.

Biometeorological predictions indicate adverse conditions for individuals with cardiovascular and respiratory issues.

Weather-sensitive individuals might experience symptoms such as mood disturbances and rheumatic pain.

Increased caution is advised for all participants in road traffic.

Agrometeorological warnings indicate that the expected morning frost could damage flowering varieties of fruits.

Farmers are advised to remain vigilant in the coming days, monitoring weather forecasts and, if possible, implementing protective measures.

Frost is predicted to be more frequent in southern Serbia on Wednesday and Thursday, with surface frost anticipated until April 12. Minimum temperatures on Wednesday are projected to be between -4 to 3 degrees Celsius, while daytime highs will range from 9 to 14 degrees.

For Thursday, minimum temperatures will vary from -3 to 4 degrees, with maximums between 11 and 15 degrees.

Recent weather data indicates that Belgrade will experience variable cloudiness mid-week, with expected minimum temperatures of 3 degrees and maximums of 12 degrees.

There are also forecasts of light rain on Thursday, with minimum temperatures around 4 degrees and maximums reaching 14 degrees.

Further weather patterns suggest two additional northern fronts with brief precipitation, occurring on Thursday and Saturday, will bring transient rain in lower areas and snowfall in hilly and mountainous regions.

Day-to-day varying conditions are expected, with remaining cloudy conditions interspersed with sunny periods and dry spells.

The windiest day is predicted to be Thursday, with strong and gusty northwesterly winds projected, particularly in Vojvodina, central, and eastern Serbia.
