Serbia Faces Tensions As Protest Groups Engage in Civil Disobedience

Opposition groups call for mass mobilization against perceived injustices as President Vučić seeks international collaboration.
In Serbia, protests have escalated as a faction known as 'Blockaders' has engaged in civil disobedience for over five months, causing significant disruptions in urban areas, particularly in Belgrade.

These groups have been accused of intimidating citizens and disrupting public life, with plans outlined for massive demonstrations.

One notable figure, engineer Zoran Đajić, who has gained media attention, has made ominous statements against President Aleksandar Vučić, including a controversial declaration of a 'death sentence' against him.

Đajić's rhetoric has incited fears regarding the conduct of these public protests and implied threats against the state.

The upcoming mass gathering on April 12 at 19:00 is being organized to send a clear message against the so-called 'quick courts,' which the protestors are claiming are operating outside the legal framework.

Supporters are urged to collectively display their opposition to what they perceive as extreme measures and violations of civil rights.

Đajić has publicly called for unity among citizens and expressed intentions to continue their actions, including potential blockades of transportation routes.

In parallel, President Vučić recently met with Ahmed Almenhali, ambassador of the United Arab Emirates, reaffirming UAE’s participation in the upcoming Expo 2027 in Belgrade.

Vučić thanked Almenhali for the confirmation, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration on infrastructure projects and economic ties between Serbia and the UAE.

On the international front, Serbian Foreign Minister in the technical mandate, Marko Đurić, addressed the United Nations Security Council, discussing the situation in Kosovo and Metohija.

Đurić reaffirmed Serbia's commitment to dialogue as crucial for stability in the region, criticizing unilateral decisions made in 2008 regarding Kosovo's independence.

He expressed concerns about the deteriorating situation for the Serbian community in Kosovo, emphasizing recent escalations that threaten their rights and living conditions.

Đurić highlighted instances of ethnically motivated incidents and alleged systematic discrimination against the Serbian populace by the current Kosovo administration, led by Albin Kurti.

He called for the Security Council to take significant actions to prevent further harm and to support the continuous presence of UN missions in the region.

The tensions surrounding these issues reflect a broader struggle for national identity and governance in the Balkans, as Serbia navigates its internal dissent while also maintaining its international relations.
