Fundraising Efforts for Educators in Serbia Yield 76.3 Million Dinars

Fundraising Efforts for Educators in Serbia Yield 76.3 Million Dinars

A significant outpouring of support sees 20,000 educational workers receiving vital aid.
In a remarkable demonstration of solidarity, the Alek Kavčić Foundation has reported that within two weeks, citizens and companies contributed 76.3 million dinars to support educators in Serbia.

This initiative arose following recommendations from the Forum of Belgrade Gymnasiums, which highlighted the financial difficulties faced by teachers and non-teaching staff who had their salaries reduced by 25,000 dinars or more.

For these individuals, the foundation is issuing payments of 18,700 dinars, while those affected by lesser reductions receive 9,350 dinars.

Approximately 20,000 teachers and non-teaching personnel across educational institutions are reported to have either not received their full salary for February 2025 or faced delays in payment.

Current estimates suggest that roughly 100 million dinars are required to address the shortfall in unpaid salaries for educators.

The majority of contributions to this fundraising effort have originated from the general public, supported by involvement from entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprises, large corporations, and members of the Serbian diaspora.

Notably, former basketball player Mića Berić raised and donated 17,500 euros through an auction of his jersey to assist educators.

The foundation is actively processing requests from educators seeking support through an email referral system.

The number of requests is reported to be continuously increasing.

As the verification process for claims regarding reduced salaries takes place, the foundation has already disbursed funds to 2,166 educational workers within the first two weeks of the initiative.

The Alek Kavčić Foundation stated that the mechanism for collecting donations from individuals and corporate entities in Serbia and abroad is efficient.

Contributions can be made via credit cards, by scanning the National Bank of Serbia's IPS QR code, direct deposits into specified accounts, or through foreign currency accounts for international donations.

Further details about the funds raised, the number of educators who have benefited from the community and corporate support, and donation methods can be accessed through the foundation’s official website.

In response to the situation, as proposed by various groups including the university community and IT Serbia, the Alek Kavčić Foundation has joined the effort to raise funds for school employees whose pay was impacted by temporary school closures.

The IT Serbia Association has also created a solidarity network to connect individuals with teachers needing assistance, available via their website.
