Iran's Supreme Leader Rejects U.S. Sanctions Relief in Nuclear Negotiations

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei asserts that negotiations with the U.S. will not lead to the lifting of sanctions affecting Iran, following a communication from President Donald Trump.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has stated that nuclear negotiations with the United States will not result in the lifting of sanctions imposed on Iran, a response made after Tehran confirmed the receipt of a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Khamenei emphasized that if the goal of the negotiations is to lift sanctions, then such a result will not come from talks with the current U.S. administration.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, revealed that the letter from President Trump was delivered to Tehran by a senior diplomat from the United Arab Emirates.

Khamenei characterized threats from the U.S. as "unconsidered" and claimed that Iran is capable of responding appropriately.

In May 2018, President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), an international agreement concerning Iran's nuclear program, which had been established three years prior.

The JCPOA was designed to provide Iran with sanctions relief in exchange for limitations on its nuclear ambitions.

Following the U.S. withdrawal, heavy sanctions were reinstated against Iran.

In response to these sanctions, Iran has significantly increased its stockpile of enriched uranium, with enrichment levels rising to 60%, close to the 90% threshold required for nuclear weapons development.

While Iran asserts its right to pursue nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, particularly for energy generation, there is widespread skepticism among Western nations regarding its intentions.

Khamenei reiterated Iran's position on nuclear weapons, stating that if Iran desired to develop such capabilities, it would be able to do so despite U.S. restrictions.

He declared, "Regarding nuclear weapons, we have been told that this will not be allowed for Iran.

If we wanted to make nuclear weapons, America could not stop us.

The fact is that we do not have nuclear weapons and we do not seek them because we do not want them."
