The $100 million EagleEye initiative aims to enhance soldier capabilities with augmented and virtual reality devices.
Meta has announced a partnership with defense company Anduril Industries on a project named EagleEye, which is set to have a value of approximately $100 million, although the contract has not yet been awarded.
This initiative is part of a larger military program valued at $22 billion, where Anduril serves as the primary supplier for wearable devices.
EagleEye will encompass a range of technologically advanced helmets, glasses, and other wearable devices designed to provide augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) experiences.
Reports indicate that these devices will feature sensors designed to enhance soldiers' auditory and visual capabilities.
Meta's CEO,
Mark Zuckerberg, stated that this technology aims to "protect interests both at home and abroad."
The devices are expected to assist in detecting drones from several kilometers away and locating concealed targets.
Moreover, they will enable soldiers to interact with artificial intelligence-driven weapon systems, as Anduril's autonomous software and Meta's AI models will form the foundation of each device.
This development comes amid a growing intersection between technology and military applications.
Palmer Luckey, the founder of Anduril Industries, stated in an interview that he has successfully persuaded not only Meta but also several other major tech companies of the importance of collaborating with the military.
In recent years, Anduril has become a significant player in the defense sector, securing $6 billion in global government contracts and forming partnerships with numerous leading tech firms.
Luckey has expressed his views on the current global landscape, noting, "I have always said that we need to move from being the world's police to being the world's arms dealer." He is a long-time supporter of former President Trump and mentioned that Anduril "performed well under Trump during his first administration" and anticipates that the company will continue to thrive.
