National Guard Deployed in Los Angeles Amidst Protests Against Immigration Policies

Approximately 300 members of the California National Guard are on the ground as violent clashes erupt between protesters and law enforcement.
Over the past few days, Los Angeles has witnessed significant unrest stemming from protests against federal immigration enforcement actions.

As a direct response to escalating tensions, approximately 300 members of the California National Guard were deployed to the city in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Izi Gardon, an assistant to California Governor Gavin Newsom, confirmed the deployment, stating that the National Guard personnel were stationed at three strategic locations throughout Los Angeles.

The protests began in Paramount, a city located approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Hollywood, where immigration enforcement agents conducted a raid targeting undocumented workers at a Home Depot store.

Following the raid, demonstrators gathered at the site, resulting in confrontations with law enforcement.

Reports indicated that projectiles, including rocks and Molotov cocktails, were thrown at federal agents, prompting a safety response from local authorities.

Federal Acting Prosecutor Bil Elesy noted that National Guard intervention was necessary to restore order following these events.

During the unrest, several law enforcement officers sustained injuries, with at least two deputies being treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

One vehicle was also reported to have been set ablaze.

Law enforcement utilized non-lethal measures, such as rubber bullets and stun grenades, to disperse crowds.

Amid the tensions, FBI officials announced the initiation of an investigation into the events occurring in Los Angeles.

Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino warned that individuals engaging in violent actions could face significant legal repercussions, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, along with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, publicly criticized President Trump's decision to deploy National Guard troops, labeling it as inflammatory and potentially detrimental to community relations.

Mayor Bass, reflecting on previous riots in 1992, expressed concern that the military presence could rekindle tensions rather than resolve the ongoing issues.

The deployment follows statements from the Pentagon, indicating that U.S. Marines may also be put on high alert should violence continue to escalate.

Defense Secretary Pit Hagerty stated that Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton are prepared to be mobilized if necessary.

Local law enforcement agencies remain on high alert as both protests and counter-protests unfold, raising concerns about further violent outbreaks in the city.
