In a dramatic finish to the Formula 1 event, Oskar Pjastri secures victory, while Max Verstappen faces penalties following a series of incidents.
Oskar Pjastri of McLaren claimed victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, marking his fifth win of the season and seventh career victory.
The race, held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, concluded with significant drama involving four-time champion Max Verstappen, who initially crossed the line in fifth place but was later relegated to tenth due to a ten-second penalty for causing a collision.
Pjastri's teammate, Lando Norris, finished second, making it a McLaren one-two, while Charles Leclerc of Ferrari rounded out the podium in third place.
With this win, Pjastri leads the drivers' championship with 186 points, followed closely by Norris with 176 points.
Verstappen currently sits in third place with 137 points after the penalty.
The race witnessed sharp strategic plays, especially from Verstappen, who switched to hard tires in the final laps and faced multiple incidents with George Russell of
Mercedes.
Initially on course for a podium finish, Verstappen's hopes faded when a safety car was deployed following a mechanical failure from
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli.
Following the restart with five laps remaining, Verstappen narrowly escaped losing control of his car at the exit of the final fast corner.
As he attempted to regain his position, Leclerc and Verstappen made contact, prompting further complications.
Russell, meanwhile, attempted an overtaking maneuver heading into the first corner, leading to another collision.
Regulations state that a driver on the inside line attempting to overtake has the right to the corner, and Verstappen was instructed by his engineer, Gianpiero Lambiasi, to relinquish any positions gained.
Confusion surrounded the incidents, particularly when Verstappen appeared to move towards the inside line, prompting Russell to overtake him on the outside.
Despite these challenges, Pjastri’s performance solidified his status as a leading contender in the championship as the Formula 1 calendar moves towards the Canadian Grand Prix, scheduled to take place in two weeks.
