Miljana and Vladimir Kecmanović face financial penalties and asset seizures following their son's actions in a mass shooting incident at a Belgrade school.
A Belgrade court has ruled that Miljana and Vladimir Kecmanović, the parents of the juvenile perpetrator of the tragic shooting at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School, must pay a total of 6.9 million dinars (approximately €58,000) to the history teacher, Tatjana Stevanović, who was severely injured in the incident.
This decision comes as part of a broader legal responsibility for the damages caused by their son, who has been accused of committing the mass shooting that resulted in multiple fatalities.
The Kecmanović family faces additional financial liabilities amounting to 344.1 million dinars (around €3 million) due to prior court rulings that enforce damage payments to the families of the victims.
In total, they are required to compensate 27 individual family members for non-material damage stemming from emotional trauma related to the loss of their loved ones in the May 3, 2023, shooting incident.
On March 19, 2023, the Belgrade Higher Court issued an order that held the juvenile perpetrator, along with his parents and the school itself, accountable for the extensive damages claimed by the victims' families.
Legal proceedings are ongoing as further claims for financial compensation continue to emerge from various affected parties.
The Kecmanović family's assets have been frozen amid the judicial process, which is expected to lead to their eventual liquidation to satisfy these substantial financial judgments.
As a result, they have been temporarily prohibited from accessing funds from their bank accounts, including cash and securities.
The Kecmanović family reportedly owns multiple properties that could be leveraged to meet these financial obligations.
Vladimir Kecmanović is reported to possess an 87-square-meter apartment and a 2005
Mercedes vehicle, while Miljana Kecmanović holds several properties, including a 47-square-meter apartment near the Vuk Memorial and a share of a family house in Niš, among others.
The total value of their assets is estimated to be around €700,000.
The parents have previously been condemned in separate criminal proceedings.
In December 2022, Vladimir was sentenced to 14.5 years in prison for criminal negligence and neglect of his son, while Miljana received a three-year sentence for the same charges but was not convicted on additional counts related to the possession of illegal firearms, despite her DNA being found on evidence retrieved from the school.
Legal experts anticipate that additional claims for damages, as well as the ongoing prosecution of the Kecmanović family, may lead to further financial liabilities as they navigate the aftermath of this highly publicized case.
