Political Tensions Rise in Serbia Amid Allegations of a Color Revolution

Prominent political figures accuse university officials of inciting unrest as protests continue.
Political tensions in Serbia escalated recently as prominent figures, including Vojislav Šešelj, president of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS), and professor Vladan Petrov, discussed allegations of a 'color revolution' during their appearance on TV Prva.

Šešelj asserted that it is inconceivable for Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to leave the country amidst these unrests.

Šešelj commented on the autonomy of the judiciary, explaining that while the prosecution is independent in terms of specific legal proceedings, it must assess whether it upholds the legal order.

He emphasized that legitimacy in government is vital, stating that all three branches of government must possess complete legitimacy.

Petrov advocated for the prosecution of all individuals committing criminal acts, particularly highlighting statements made by university rector Vladan Đokić.

Petrov suggested that if he were in Đokić's position, he would eliminate any potential conflict with the state, asserting the university’s integral role in the national context.

Šešelj referred to the university as a 'state in the making' and called for the arrest of Đokić, labeling him as a key figure in the current unrest.

He claimed that Đokić had recently spent a week in Brussels, receiving instructions on how to further incite protests in Belgrade, identifying two main centers of unrest in Serbia: one in Belgrade and another in Novi Sad.

Šešelj also criticized law enforcement agencies for inaction, referencing incidents where police officers were allegedly attacked during protests.

He pointed out that those responsible for violence against civilians had yet to be apprehended, citing a specific incident involving the use of pepper spray against a pregnant woman.

Petrov recommended leveraging all available internal resources to maintain legal and state order, expressing confidence that the state retains control over the situation.

Šešelj characterized the protests as a coordinated action by Serbian enemies, manipulated by internal traitors, and labeled protesting students as 'puppets' being exploited.

Both Šešelj and Petrov highlighted the critical nature of the political order in Serbia, with Šešelj describing ongoing actions against the state as a comprehensive attack on the legal and political system.

He stressed the need for a firmer response from the authorities, indicating that Vučić should adopt a more aggressive approach.

Regarding claims that Vučić could flee the country, Šešelj dismissed these as improbable based on his longstanding acquaintance with the president, asserting that Vučić would remain steadfast.

He warned that the leaders of the protests would respond with violence if they came to power, drawing historical parallels to past political repressions.

The discourse surrounding police response to protests was also brought to the fore, with Šešelj referencing historical instances of state responses to civil unrest, suggesting that the current authorities are not equipped to adequately manage emerging public disorder.

He noted that the challenge remains for law enforcement to ensure public safety while managing rising tensions in the streets.
