Reactions Emerge as Perpetrators of Mladenovac Massacre Appeal Sentencing

Families of victims express outrage over the appeal by Uroš and Radiša Blažić against their 20-year prison sentences stemming from a tragic incident that shocked Serbia.
The families of victims from the Mladenovac massacre have voiced their anger and frustration following the news that Uroš Blažić, the perpetrator of the tragedy, has appealed his 20-year prison sentence.

The incident, which occurred on May 4, 2023, resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and injuries to twelve others, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

Saša Panić, who lost both of his children, Milan and Kristina, during the attack, expressed profound disbelief at the appeal.

The Blažić family, including Uroš and his father Radiša, were sentenced for their roles in the shooting that took place in the schoolyard of their village, Dubona.

Uroš Blažić fired multiple rounds, tragically impacting the lives of Panić and many others.

In response to the appeal, Panić stated, "When we heard the news, we were furious.

We thought they would at least have a shred of decency, but once again, they have shown no remorse and have further harmed us by filing this appeal.

This sentence is an embarrassment."

The appeals case has been submitted to the Appellate Court in Belgrade, with the families urging the judiciary to reject the motion.

Panić suggested a broader discussion about accountability, indicating that other potential accomplices, including military personnel and social workers, who may have indirectly contributed to the circumstances leading to the crime, should also face scrutiny.

Milosav Todorović, another father of a victim, Dalibor, shared his sentiments, asserting that the sentence does not adequately reflect the severity of the crime.

He highlighted the long-term consequences for the survivors and the families of the victims.

"I believe the court will reject this appeal.

They should have received the maximum punishment for taking nine lives.

Twenty years is too little.

Throughout the trial, their lack of remorse was evident, and we have yet to comprehend the motives for this devastating act," Todorović remarked.

The outrage among the families underscores the profound emotional and psychological impact the tragedy has inflicted on the Mladenovac community.

As they await further developments in the legal proceedings, the families continue to grapple with their loss while seeking justice in what remains a disturbing chapter in the region's recent history.
