Serbia Faces Government Formation Challenges Amidst University Protests

Prime Minister Ana Brnabić emphasizes the urgency of establishing a new government as consultations for a potential new mandate begin.
Ana Brnabić, the President of the Serbian Assembly, has stated the necessity for Serbia to quickly establish a new government amidst ongoing political tensions and university protests.

As President Aleksandar Vučić engages in consultations with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) regarding the nomination of a new prime minister, Brnabić indicated that surprises are expected in the proposal of new candidates.

Brnabić highlighted the limited timeframe, asserting that clarity on whether a new government will be formed or if new elections will be held is imminent.

She emphasized that if a government is not established by midnight on April 18, new elections would be scheduled for early June.

During an interview, Brnabić underscored the importance of dialogue in resolving the current political and social challenges.

She mentioned that constructive discussions are imperative for overcoming crises, stating that responsible individuals with integrity are needed to facilitate effective communication.

Brnabić criticized the atmosphere of anonymity surrounding some dissenting parties, which she considers a significant barrier to open dialogue.

Furthermore, Brnabić has made repeated appeals for dialogue with various groups, including the academic community and protesters.

She contended that a transparent and responsible society cannot exist if discussions are hindered by anonymity.

According to her, the government remains committed to opening avenues for dialogue, but she stressed that cooperation and accountability must be demonstrated by all parties involved.

The Prime Minister also addressed the impact of ongoing protests at universities on student education.

She raised concerns that if academic activities resume on April 15, the quality of education could be irreparably affected.

Brnabić pointed out that responsibility rests with university authorities, particularly accusing deans of certain faculties and the Rector of the University of Belgrade, Vladan Đokić, of complicity in the situation.

Brnabić asserted that the blockade of university operations violates multiple laws, including the Law on Higher Education and provisions outlined in the Serbian Constitution that prohibit discrimination.

She mentioned that students who wish to continue their studies have faced challenges in communicating with authorities, noting that their requests for academic resumption have frequently gone unanswered.

The Prime Minister characterized the situation at the University of Belgrade as politically charged and claimed that the actions of deans and the rector reflect a pattern of discrimination against academically active students.

She pointed out that 442 specific students from the Faculty of Law have formally requested to attend classes and have experienced unresponsiveness from their administration.

Brnabić further urged that the government must respond to these academic disruptions in a manner that ensures every student’s right to education is upheld, stating that it is crucial for the state to intervene when educational standards are in jeopardy.

The situation has prompted wider public scrutiny, as Brnabić remarked on the growing observation of the protests and the implications for higher education governance in Serbia.

As the conversation progresses regarding new governmental leadership and the dire state of the education sector, the developments remain closely watched by all sectors of society.
