Vice Prime Minister Ivica Dačić announces the apprehension of seven irregular Afghan migrants along with a cache of weapons in Serbia.
In a recent operation spearheaded by Serbian authorities, seven irregular migrants from
Afghanistan were discovered in an improvised camp consisting of four tents in the vicinity of the village of Grapa, located in the municipality of Dimitrovgrad.
Alongside the apprehended individuals, law enforcement officials also uncovered a small arsenal: two pistols with 23 rounds of ammunition and an automatic rifle equipped with two magazines containing 55 rounds.
This revelation was announced by Ivica Dačić, Serbia’s Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs, who specified that the migrants are currently under police control and that procedures regarding their status are underway.
Details of the operation were released in a statement by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and reported by Tanjug, the Serbian news agency.
The mission involved the Coordinated efforts of the Regional Centre of the Border Police stationed along the Bulgarian frontier, along with the Gendarmerie Detachment based in Niš.
This joint initiative underscores Serbia's ongoing challenges with managing irregular migration flows, an issue compounded by the nation's position along the Balkan migration route.
The discovery signals a continued pattern of migrant movement from conflict-torn nations such as
Afghanistan, seeking refuge or transit routes through Southeast Europe towards Western Europe.
This incident highlights the persistent security concerns tied to migration that involve not only humanitarian considerations but also the potential trafficking of arms.
Serbian authorities continue to play a critical role in European migration dynamics, balancing the need for collaborative international security measures while adhering to regional humanitarian obligations.
