Serbian President Criticizes Police Response to Violence in Niš

Aleksandar Vučić condemns police handling of an incident where members of the Serbian Progressive Party were attacked.
On the evening of a reported incident in Niš, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that the police handled the situation poorly, failing to adequately respond to aggression against members of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

The confrontation involved the throwing of eggs and stones at party officials and supporters, resulting in serious injuries to six individuals, including three women.

During a visit to the Toplica and Jablanica regions, Vučić expressed his frustration over the police's inaction and emphasized that the state must respond to violence in accordance with the law.

He condemned all forms of bullying against women and citizens, highlighting the need for stronger measures against such behavior.

In his remarks, he indicated that he had not slept following the incident, accepting partial responsibility for the police's failure to adequately address violence during recent protests.

Additionally, he noted his dismay at reports that one of the primary aggressors from the incident was released by prosecutors without facing detention.

Vučić described the actions of the relevant authorities as unacceptable, stating that police and prosecutors who do not uphold public order would be replaced.

He criticized the prosecutors for not seeking pre-trial detention following the violence in Niš, labeling their inaction as disgraceful.

He asserted that significant financial resources had been directed into Serbia with the aim of inciting unrest, yet he reaffirmed his commitment to his political agenda.

He stated that he would not allow bullying to go unchecked and asserted that the police must enforce the law more rigorously.

While addressing constituents in Leskovac, Vučić condemned the behavior of protest organizers, accusing them of fostering an environment of violence and chaos.

He emphasized that the only sanctioned gathering in Niš was the SNS meeting, which was inadequately secured by police, further asserting that any opposition to political gatherings that adhere to legal standards is fundamentally anti-democratic.

The president characterized the acts of aggression against the SNS members as reminiscent of fascism, indicating a broader pattern of violent opposition against those with dissenting political views.

In his comments, Vučić reiterated his belief in the necessity for the government to maintain strict law enforcement and to treat acts of violence as serious offenses that cannot be tolerated.

He announced plans to convene a meeting to initiate the formation of a new citizens' movement, which will explore the future direction of Serbia.

The ongoing visit to the Toplica and Jablanica regions included a tour of the fruit processing factory "Voćar Kosančić," where an agenda focused on regional development and employment opportunities was discussed.
