Six Arrested in Corruption Investigation at the University of Novi Sad Medical Faculty

Authorities take action against faculty staff for alleged financial misconduct damaging state budget by over 181 million dinars.
Members of the Ministry of Interior's Department for Combating Corruption, in coordination with the Tax Police, arrested six individuals, including employees from the Medical Faculty of Novi Sad, following an investigation ordered by the Special Department for Fighting Corruption of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad.

The arrests were made due to suspicions that these individuals engaged in illegal activities resulting in a financial loss to the state budget exceeding 181 million dinars.

Among those arrested was B. J. (1960), the finance officer of the Medical Faculty, who is suspected of committing money laundering and extended abuse of official position.

Two other faculty members, V. Š.

(1985), head of the Legal, Personnel, and General Services at the faculty, and Đ.

M. (1964), who serves as the responsible person for a student cooperative in Novi Sad, are also under investigation for money laundering and aiding in the abuse of official position.

Additionally, S. B. (1964), the dean of the faculty, and S. T. (1979), a financial accounting officer at the faculty, have been arrested on suspicion of committing extended abuse of official position in conspiracy.

R. G. (1973), also a financial accounting manager, faces charges of both the extended abuse of official position and tax evasion.

According to the Ministry of Interior, Đ.

M. is suspected, in agreement with B. J. and V. Š., of converting 15,511,330 dinars into cash from the total of 21,235,508 dinars that the Medical Faculty transferred to the student cooperative based on issued fraudulent invoices for services that were not provided.

This transaction allegedly resulted in damage to the Serbian budget exceeding 17.2 million dinars.

R. G. is accused of providing incorrect data to the Tax Administration on two occasions from January 2022 to June 2024, with the intent of avoiding corporate income tax payments, leading to a reported damage of 115,968,480 dinars to the state budget.

Furthermore, from January 2022 to the end of 2024, B. J., R. G., S. B., and S. T. are suspected of improperly calculating taxes and contributions based on higher wages than prescribed, which reportedly harmed the Medical Faculty for 47,433,749 dinars.

The arrested individuals have been held for up to 48 hours and are expected to be presented to the relevant prosecutor’s office along with a criminal complaint.
