Student Protests Gain Momentum in Serbia Amid Bicycle Journey to Strasbourg

Nationwide demonstrations carry on, with significant events including a bicycle tour and various blockades organized by students.
Protests, citizen assemblies, and faculty blockades continue across Serbia.

A group of students who commenced their bicycle journey from Novi Sad to Strasbourg on April 3 are currently en route from Győr, Hungary, to Vienna, making an extended stop in Bratislava.

The students have covered over 470 kilometers and plan to travel an additional 144 kilometers on the fifth day of their journey.

In Kragujevac, local students blocked the roundabout at Đurđevdanski Krst early this morning at around 10 AM.

In Belgrade, student demonstrators have taken to the streets, obstructing traffic as they move towards the Union University in response to the announcement of the April examination period.

As part of a moment of remembrance, citizens and students throughout Serbia observed a 16-minute silence to honor the victims of the recent shelter collapse incident.

According to plans, the students participating in the bicycle tour are expected to arrive in the Slovak capital at approximately 1:30 PM, where a reception awaits them.

They will stay for about an hour before proceeding to Vienna, a city with a sizable Serbian diaspora, for a larger welcome.

After spending the night in Vienna, the students will continue towards Emersdorf along a route of 88 kilometers.

In Kragujevac, students from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics are set to maintain their blockade of the roundabout at Đurđevdanski Krst until 4:16 PM. The blockade will include organized sports activities and a social games zone.

Also in Belgrade, students have gathered in front of the Union University, blocking Cara Dušana Street to perform a 16-minute silence in remembrance of the collapse victims.

This gathering coincides with the anticipated start of exams.

Silence will be observed until 12:08 PM, after which speeches are scheduled to take place at 12:30 PM.

The students plan to create a “loud demonstration” following the silent tribute.

Their messages highlight a collective dissatisfaction with governmental neglect regarding issues affecting their safety and well-being.

A call for solidarity has been extended to all supporters.

A protest assembly at the National Library of Serbia commenced today at 11:40 AM, highlighting the library’s bombing in 1941 while addressing current concerns regarding the construction of a nearby three-story garage.

Participants are aiming to raise awareness about the investment potentially undermining the library’s facilities.

The event includes a 16-minute silence for the 16 victims of the recent tragedy, followed by speeches from library representatives and a performance by the student choir from the Faculty of Music.

At the Higher Technical School in Novi Sad, students implemented a complete blockade after the announcement of a visit from school administration.

They invited parents and citizens to support their effort against the dismantling of their blockade.

A number of parents gathered outside the school while some staff and administration remained outside the fence.

The students’ actions prevented the school director from obtaining the seal necessary for certification of budgeting documents, despite prior practices allowing such agreements.

School administration stated that relations with students had been positive before a deterioration occurred, particularly due to delays in salary payments affecting some faculty members.

Students from Novi Sad have organized a 'Bicycle Tour for Justice and Solidarity,' setting off on April 9 to protest in Novi Pazar and Kraljevo over a journey spanning approximately 526 kilometers.

They plan to reach Novi Pazar by April 12, participating in protests planned there, and will sleep in various towns along the route.

Donations are being sought for essential supplies to support the trip.
