Students March Toward Belgrade: Groups Arrive from Across the Country

Students from various cities in Serbia participate in a march to Belgrade ahead of the planned protest on March 15th.
Students who have been engaged in a blockade for nearly four months have embarked on a march toward Belgrade, where a major protest titled "15 for 15" is scheduled to take place on March 15th, organized by their counterparts from Belgrade.

Groups of students have set out on foot or by bicycle from locations including Sombor, Kragujevac, Niš, Čačak, Kraljevo, Šabac, and other cities across the country, with students from Novi Sad joining the march today.

More than two thousand students commenced their trek on foot from Novi Sad this morning to attend the significant protest.

Accompanying them are professors, local citizens, cyclists, motorcyclists, farmers, and a group of former activists.

The collective gathered from early morning hours in front of the Rectorate building of the University of Novi Sad.

In addition to the students from Novi Sad, the procession includes students from Subotica who arrived in Novi Sad on foot on Monday.

Today's route spans through Sremski Karlovci and Inđija to Stara Pazova, where they plan to rest overnight before continuing their journey to Belgrade.

Followed by tractors, vehicles supporting the march carry essentials such as water and medical supplies.

Students and high schoolers from Kragujevac departed around 10 a.m. from Mladenovac, where they spent the night.

On the third day of their walk, they are traversing challenging terrain toward Grocka, expecting to arrive by approximately 10 p.m., according to local reports.

During the march, participants paused for 15 minutes to pay their respects to the victims who fell during the collapse of the shelter at the railway station in Novi Sad.

Traffic was halted at multiple points in Belgrade during the "15 Minutes of Silence" initiative, with residents of Kovina, Lazarevac, and Sremski Karlovci also honoring the victims.

Marchers carried Serbian flags, and one banner proclaimed, "Students are the heart of Serbia." Law and technology faculty students in Belgrade supported the initiative by blocking the intersection of Ruzveltova and Kraljice Marije streets, observing a moment of silence for the victims.

The gathering was marked by the banner "Machinists Against Machinery," alongside flags from the Architecture and Law faculties, and proceeded without incidents.

Belgrade high schools are preparing for the arrival of high school students from various regions of Serbia for the protest on March 15th.

Some schools have organized accommodations for these guests.

According to Ana Dimitrijević, the president of the Forum of Belgrade Gymnasiums, students will host peers from first, third, eighth, tenth, twelfth, and thirteenth gymnasiums.

Obrenovac Gymnasium is also preparing to host students.

The secondary school in Grocka, although not a part of the Forum, is also making arrangements for students attending the significant protest.

A number of schools, including Dimitrijević's Ninth Belgrade Gymnasium, have declared a twenty-four-hour blockade, stating that there will be no classes and only simulations will occur in empty classrooms.

Citizens from Niš are coordinating plans via social media to travel together to Belgrade on Saturday, March 15th.

The announced assembly time is 5:00 a.m. at Bulevar Nikole Tesle, behind the "Filip Moris" factory, with departure planned for 5:30 a.m. Drivers are advised to fill their fuel tanks before departure and maintain a speed of 100 to 110 km/h during the journey.

Upon arrival in Belgrade, drivers will need to find parking independently.

Students from the University of Niš have already begun their journey to the capital.

Around 500 university students departed on March 9th by bus to the Manasija Monastery near Despotovac and continued on foot from there.

They reached Smederevo for an overnight stay and continued toward Pančevo, planning to cover 43.5 kilometers in one day.

Approximately 70 cyclists began their march toward Belgrade from Niš on Tuesday and reached Čačak by last night, with a 70-kilometer route ahead to Lazarevac today.

The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade has called upon all protest participants and other citizens to adhere to regulations regarding public order and peace, urging that the right to peaceful assembly be exercised in accordance with the Constitution and Serbian law.

The Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that police will implement all necessary measures and actions to ensure that the announced gathering occurs peacefully and respectfully, without compromising public order or safety.

The Prosecutor’s Office underscored the right to peaceful assembly but stated that violence will not be tolerated, and those who resort to it will be prosecuted by law, including individuals who may attack peaceful protesters as well as those who commit violence against others, police members, and representatives of governmental bodies.

The Serbian Bar Association has pointed out that Serbia, according to its Constitution, laws, and ratified international agreements, is obligated to safeguard the right to life and physical integrity.

In response to various media reports indicating risks of organized violence towards citizens participating in the planned protest on March 15th, the Bar Association stressed its duty to address this issue.

They highlighted that public prosecutors have not commented on this situation.

They affirmed that human life is inviolable under the Constitution, and physical and psychological integrity must not be violated.

An attack on the life and physical integrity of citizens during peaceful gatherings by officials performing their duties constitutes a serious criminal offense.

Officials must not execute orders that require the commission of a crime.

The Bar Association also called for all citizens, including representatives of public authorities, to refrain from actions that could jeopardize or impair the lives or physical integrity of citizens participating in the planned protests on March 15th, 2025, in Belgrade.

In support of the students, the Independent Union of Education Workers of Serbia has called upon its members and other educators to take to the streets on March 15th, asserting that this day is meant to demonstrate solidarity with students and defend constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of movement, assembly, association, opinion, and expression.

They expressed dissatisfaction with the threats, insults, and exploitation faced from the current government.

The Association of Farmers from Subotica has announced its support for citizens heading to Belgrade for the protest on March 15th.

In coordination with other associations nationwide, they plan to take to the streets with tractors along key roadways as a warning against any attempts to halt their progress to the protest.

Should their members traveling by tractors be blocked, they will join other groups in blocking the Bikovačka interchange on the highway as a precaution.

They noted that if peaceful passage to Belgrade is ensured on Friday, they will remain at their designated positions along the routes, while providing local support during the protest in Belgrade on March 15th alongside citizens and motorcyclists.
