A clinical trial is currently being conducted in the United States to assess a medication that might prolong the lifespan of dogs.

This investigation, referred to as the STAY trial, is being carried out by Loyal, an animal health company located in San Francisco.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled study involves a minimum of one thousand senior dogs, with the aim of seeking approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) based on the results.

This trial follows successful preclinical and pilot studies.

As noted by Alex Robb, medical director of Goodheart Animal Health Center in Colorado, the dogs participating will receive daily doses of the medication over a span of four years, along with routine clinical assessments.

Researchers will evaluate the drug's effect on longevity upon completion of the study.

To be eligible for participation, dogs must be at least ten years old and weigh fourteen pounds or more.

Owners must consent to transfer their pet’s primary care to a participating study clinic and commit to multiple veterinary appointments throughout the four years.

The first year entails six visits, with two visits required each subsequent year.

The study aims to investigate factors that contribute to canine aging, including their higher metabolic rates compared to humans.

While veterinary advancements have enhanced healthcare for dogs, their overall lifespan has not kept pace with the increase in human life expectancy.

Loyal plans to utilize the data gathered to pursue conditional FDA approval for the drug by the end of the year.

Recruitment for the study is still in progress at various clinics nationwide.
