White House Lifts Export Controls on Anthropic’s Advanced AI Models Following Safety Review

The U.S. Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Anthropic's advanced Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models following successful negotiations to address cybersecurity vulnerabilities and safety protocols. The decision follows weeks of cooperation intended to bolster American leadership in the AI sector while ensuring robust guardrails against potential system exploits.
The United States government has officially lifted export controls on Anthropic's most advanced artificial intelligence models, according to a statement released by the company on Tuesday evening.

Anthropic confirmed that the Department of Commerce has removed restrictions on both Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The company announced it would begin restoring access to these models the following day. This announcement followed a social media post from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who stated that officials worked closely with Anthropic over the past two weeks to analyze and approve Fable 5. Lutnick noted this cooperation was intended to ensure alignment across the U.S. Government and strengthen American leadership in the AI sector.

Fable is a version of the Mythos model equipped with additional guardrails designed for public use. The prior export ban and subsequent negotiations highlighted ongoing regulatory uncertainty as AI technology continues to evolve rapidly.

The restrictions were initially triggered after reports surfaced that Amazon, identified as a trusted partner, discovered a "jailbreak"—a method to bypass Fable's safety protocols. While Anthropic noted at the time that these workarounds were simple and common across other public models, a source within the company stated they implemented new safeguards to specifically block the vulnerabilities reported by Amazon.

In response to those risks, the Commerce Department had previously mandated that Anthropic suspend access for all foreign nationals, including its own employees. This led Anthropic to disable customer access to both Mythos and Fable. Following technical cooperation between the firm and the government to address cybersecurity concerns, the Commerce Department allowed the release of Mythos to a select group of government-approved entities last week.

Experts have warned that Mythos possesses the capability to exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities at an unprecedented speed, leading Anthropic to limit its distribution to key partners intended to protect critical software. Similar concerns prompted the White House to request that OpenAI limit the release of its upcoming GPT 5.6 model to a small group of approved partners due to its advanced capabilities. OpenAI responded by stating they do not believe such government access processes should become a long-term standard.
