Ursula von der Leyen criticizes the recently imposed tariffs by the United States, predicting severe economic consequences worldwide.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has sharply criticized the latest tariffs imposed by the United States on global trade, warning that they will have "CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES" for the economy and millions of people around the world.
Her comments came in response to U.S. President
Donald Trump’s announcement of a 20% retaliatory tariff on goods imported from the European Union.
Von der Leyen emphasized the significant repercussions, noting that the global economy would suffer a tremendous blow, increasing uncertainty and expanding protectionist measures.
She stated that the adverse effects would be felt by consumers and businesses alike, ultimately resulting in higher costs.
"This will be felt immediately, particularly by the most vulnerable citizens.
All businesses, whether small or large, will suffer consequences from day one," she remarked.
Additionally, she expressed concerns about the wide-ranging nature of the tariffs, indicating that they would severely jeopardize trade relations with what she described as "Europe’s oldest ally." Von der Leyen pointed out that the cost of doing business with the United States would drastically increase and criticized the chaotic and indiscriminate impact on all major trading partners.
In light of these developments, the European Union has announced that it is already preparing countermeasures.
Von der Leyen confirmed that Europe is in the final stages of formulating an initial package of measures in response to the initial steel tariffs, and further actions are being planned should negotiations fail to yield results.
She reiterated the unity and determination of Europe, stating, "Europe stands together: if you attack one of us, you attack all of us.
Our unity is our strength," pledging support for all those directly affected by the new tariffs while committing to advocate for fair international trade based on established rules.
