Family of Tragic Accident Victim Urges Calm Amidst Protests in Serbia

Đuro Raca calls for justice through institutional processes rather than civil unrest following a fatal incident in Novi Sad.
The family of Goran Raca, who tragically lost her life after a canopy collapsed at the railway station in Novi Sad on November 1, has expressed their disapproval of the current protests and calls for chaos unfolding in Serbia.

In a public statement, Đuro Raca, the father of the deceased, appealed to the public that the ongoing agitation is not a valid means to seek justice for victims like his daughter.

Raca stated, 'They have used this unfortunate incident caused by external factors, partly fueled by domestic opposition against the state.' He emphasized confidence in the justice system, asserting that both the prosecutor's office and the courts are fulfilling their roles appropriately.

The Raca family condemned the actions of opposition groups and students, claiming they are attempting to undermine state order and exploit this tragedy for their agendas.

Raca highlighted the family’s belief in the state’s institutions to properly investigate the incident and identify those responsible for the canopy's collapse.

He remarked on the importance of allowing these institutions to operate effectively, stating, 'If the institutions are closed, there will be no resolution.'

In a further appeal, he differentiated between the students who wish to study peacefully in Pionirski Park and those who engage in disruptive protests.

He criticized the celebrations and inappropriate conduct witnessed on the streets following a moment of silence for the victims.

Moreover, Raca expressed gratitude towards the city of Novi Sad and the Social Welfare Center for their prompt response after his daughter's tragic death, noting that they provided considerable support during a difficult time for the family.

He conveyed appreciation for the honors and condolences they received, stating that these gestures significantly eased their grief.

Finally, he requested that the name of the late Goran Raca be respected, adding that she should be allowed to rest in peace while urging that the investigation and search for accountability be conducted through appropriate channels without the interference of ongoing protests.
