Growth of the Healthcare Market in Serbia: Increasing Private Sector Involvement

The Serbian healthcare market is projected to reach €5 billion in 2024, anticipating a 10% annual growth, with the private sector playing a significant role.
The healthcare market in Serbia is estimated to reach €5 billion in 2024, with an anticipated annual growth rate of approximately 10%, indicating stable development.

The private healthcare sector constitutes about 10% of the total market, valued at nearly half a billion euros for the same year.

Over the past seven years, the private sector has recorded an average annual growth rate of 15%, with a projected growth rate of around 12% in the coming years.

The development of the private healthcare sector in Serbia has occurred through various forms of investment, comprising approximately 700 healthcare institutions ranging from small private practices to large integrated systems.

There is significant growth potential in the healthcare sector, evidenced by the increasing interest from international investors.

Large integrated health systems, such as MediGroup and Acibadem Belmedic, are established on foreign capital, while Euromedik is based on domestic entrepreneurial investment.

Dr. Draško Karađinović from the non-governmental organization "Doctors Against Corruption" indicated that the private sector encompasses a far greater number of facilities and practices.

Over 3,200 private dental offices exist, although there is no official, accurate record of the total number of medical practices, surgical rooms, MRI machines, scanners, X-ray cabinets, hospital beds, biochemical and histopathological laboratories in the private sector.

It is estimated that around 30,000 healthcare workers and associates are employed in the private sector.

Dr. Karađinović noted that for certain services, private healthcare can be competitive and thus attractive to foreign users and investors.

This currently applies primarily to ambulatory medical services, rehabilitation treatments, and spa therapies.

However, significant changes in the systemic environment are required for substantial domestic and foreign investment, emphasizing the need to improve competitiveness, productivity, and quality through a complex process that necessitates the alignment of economic, educational, and regulatory factors.

He further stated that the capacities within the private sector are significant and should be formally recognized in public health institutions if regulatory frameworks were adjusted, providing a clearer picture of private healthcare's contributions.

Even in its current state, the private sector is seen as making an essential contribution to the health status of the nation.

Integrated private systems contribute to strengthening overall healthcare infrastructure, the development of the private sector, and the Serbian economy.

Foreign capital has enabled better access to specialized medical services, the introduction of modern technologies, and increased competition in the market, positively impacting service quality.

Furthermore, these systems aim to recruit the best professionals in the country and play a significant role in enhancing the quality of healthcare for citizens of Serbia and the region.

In a dynamic and competitive market, participants are incentivized to improve their services, implement innovations, and align with the highest medical standards.

Indicators suggest that there is room for further healthy competition in the domestic market, and foreign investments bring best global practices that directly contribute to the improvement of healthcare quality.
