Aleksandar Vučić discusses the implications of U.S. sanctions on NIS amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Aleksandar Vučić, the President of Serbia, stated that the administration of U.S. President
Donald Trump is unlikely to alter its position regarding the American sanctions imposed on the Serbian oil company NIS.
Vučić indicated that a shift in this stance could only arise from a significant agreement related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
He expressed skepticism about the possibility of such a deal emerging in the near future, predicting that a resolution may occur when one side is considerably weaker and in a position to seek an end to hostilities.
He elaborated that for this to happen, Russia would need to advance into Ukrainian territory more decisively, or Ukraine would have to launch a counteroffensive.
During an interview with TV Informer, Vučić was asked about the possibility of a meeting between U.S. President
Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Belgrade.
He acknowledged that while such a meeting could be feasible, it is not realistic at present.
Vučić emphasized that Serbia had offered to host such discussions, yet highlighted the complexities involved for Putin, particularly regarding travel across NATO countries, in which he may not have trust.
He noted that Putin might find it easier to engage with Turkey, given the geographic connections between the two nations.
The context of this discussion comes amidst heightened geopolitical tensions and ongoing military engagements following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has provoked extensive international responses, including sanctions targeted at various Russian interests and affiliates.
