Healthcare Workers in Valjevo Express Solidarity with Medical Students

748 signatures collected in support of students demanding reforms spark discussions of potential general strike.
Medical workers in Valjevo, Serbia, have expressed strong solidarity with local medical students by collecting 748 signatures in support of their demands.

By signing, the healthcare professionals have signaled their willingness to participate in a general strike if necessary.

The initiative, led by employees in the Valjevo Health Center, reflects a growing discontent among medical staff regarding systemic issues in the healthcare sector, including corruption and administrative inefficiencies.

During a gathering at the helipad of Valjevo Hospital—designated for emergency cases—medical workers voiced their concerns.

‘Enough is enough with arrogance and corruption,’ stated gynecologist Nenad Dimitrijević, emphasizing the collective frustration among healthcare workers.

Medical technician Ilija Kovačević confirmed the sentiment, stating, ‘I see no other solution but a general strike.

We are certainly prepared for that step.’

The support event was notable not just for its turnout but also for the morale it brought to the students.

Student Sofija Nenadović remarked, ‘This is a significant step; I believe this is the first support of its kind from healthcare workers in Serbia, and I take pride in that it started here.’

The climate in Serbia's healthcare system has been under scrutiny, with many asserting a need for reform to ensure that skilled professionals remain within the country rather than seeking opportunities abroad.

‘This struggle is also for the future generations—to ensure they don’t leave the country,’ Dimitrijević added, highlighting the importance of retaining talent in the national healthcare system.

The event reflects a broader context of labor activism within Serbia, where healthcare professionals have increasingly sought to advocate for their rights and the rights of students training to join their ranks.

The momentum from this gathering could signal a pivotal moment in the ongoing dialogue around healthcare reform in Serbia.
