Protests in Serbia: Citizens Rally Against Corruption and Support for Educators

Over a thousand citizens gather in Gornji Milanovac, advocating for victims of corruption and rallying for improved educational conditions.
More than a thousand citizens took to the streets in Gornji Milanovac under the banner "For the Victims of Corruption, For Our Professors, For a Better Tomorrow" on the evening of March 28, 2025. The demonstration began at Prince Mihailo Square with a 17-minute silence in honor of the sixteen victims of a canopy collapse at the railway station in Novi Sad, as well as a one-year-old child from Gornji Milanovac who died in a traffic accident four days prior.

During the protest march through the city's central streets, demonstrators used vuvuzelas and whistles to amplify their message.

At the forefront of the procession, high school graduates carried a banner reading "This is Our Country." Participants displayed various signs, including messages such as "Educators are not keyboards for warriors" and "AV must realize educators need their salaries back." The gathering concluded with chants of "If you're not jumping, you're a ‘ćaci!’"

The protest was organized by students and high school seniors from Gornji Milanovac, who expressed their support for teachers, a continued fight against corruption, and the aspiration for a better, fairer system.

The event remained peaceful, with police directing traffic as demonstrators blocked streets during the march.

Amidst growing concerns about police actions against dissenting citizens, a group named "Students in Blockade" expressed alarm over the significant number of student arrests in recent days.

They highlighted rhetoric from national leaders perceived as threatening, with calls for the judiciary and police to adopt a more repressive stance towards protesters.

Following a series of events where peaceful protests resulted in confrontational responses from law enforcement, including excessive force during a prior demonstration in Novi Sad, this sentiment persists among the student body.

Reports of police actions indicated that several students suffered injuries in a confrontation that occurred in Novi Sad, leading to a larger assembly in solidarity with the affected individuals.

As tensions continued, gatherings in other cities, including Kragujevac, also began to take place, emphasizing public displeasure over increasing pressure against those expressing political dissent.

In Novi Sad, on the same night, students protested due to an incident involving the assault of four peers from the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education.

The students gathered in the campus area and marched towards the city center, joined by local citizens and motorcyclists, to raise awareness about the violence their colleagues faced.

Demonstrators in Novi Sad chanted similar slogans while expressing their discontent towards the political climate, calling for accountability and justice for the attacks.

Subsequently, police acknowledged the occurrence of a violent incident involving students and stated that investigations would be ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the assault.

Officials clarified that the wounded students had not reported the incident as politically motivated at that time.

The potential for further protests was indicated, with some students announcing plans for a bicycle journey to Strasbourg as a means to bring their grievances to the attention of European institutions.
