Coca-Cola Recalls Products in Europe Over Elevated Chlorate Levels

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners recalls beverages across six countries following safety concerns related to high chlorate levels.
Coca-Cola's European bottling unit has initiated a large-scale recall of several beverages, including Coke and Sprite, across six countries due to elevated chlorate levels, the company announced on Monday.

The recall affects products distributed in Belgium, the Netherlands, Britain, Germany, France, and Luxembourg since November, according to Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium.

Chlorate, a compound derived from chlorine disinfectants commonly used in water treatment and food processing, poses potential health risks with long-term exposure, particularly for children with iodine deficiencies, as stated by the European Food Safety Authority in a 2015 opinion.

While Coca-Cola Europacific Partners did not disclose the exact quantity of affected products, the company described it as a 'considerable amount.' It emphasized that most of the unsold products have already been removed from store shelves, and efforts are ongoing to withdraw the remaining items.

The recall, prompted by a routine inspection at Coca-Cola's Ghent production facility, includes products with production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE. Brands involved in the recall include Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss, Tropico, and Fuze Tea.

Despite the recall, Coca-Cola’s French branch stated that independent expert analysis found the likelihood of health risks to be 'very low.' No consumer complaints have been reported regarding the issue.

In France, the recall does not currently apply to affected batches of Coke and Fuze Tea delivered to the market.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed its ongoing communication with relevant authorities in the affected countries to ensure consumer safety.
