Serbia and UK Strengthen Bilateral Relations Through Signed Agreements

President Aleksandar Vučić and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy discuss cooperation and regional stability in Belgrade.
In a significant diplomatic engagement, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić met with the United Kingdom's Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy, at the Villa Mir in Belgrade.

The meeting commenced at 7:00 PM local time and was attended by senior officials, including Serbian ministers in a technical mandate, Siniša Mali, Marko Đurić, and Ivica Dačić.

Following their discussions, a series of bilateral documents were signed, signifying a commitment to enhanced cooperation between Serbia and the UK. Vučić emphasized the importance of balanced trade relations, noting an increase in both imports and exports between the two nations.

He expressed gratitude for the UK’s support in key Serbian development projects and highlighted the efficiency of operations within the Serbian Ministry of Finance.

During his remarks, Vučić addressed the issue of irregular migration, underscoring the need to respect human rights while managing migration flows.

He also commented on the political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, stating that he does not concur with the notion that Milorad Dodik should be placed solely at fault for the ongoing challenges there.

The Serbian President urged those engaged in discussions to seek compromise solutions, reiterating Serbia's respect for the Dayton Agreement and advocating for peace and stability in the region.

Vučić reported that Serbia is projected to be among the top three countries in terms of economic growth this year, and he expressed satisfaction over the handling of protests in Serbia, in contrast to the use of force reported in other countries.

He asserted that Serbia has shown how democracy can be protected through maturity and patience, fostering a climate of stability.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, in his address, acknowledged the historical ties between Serbia and the UK, noting that Belgrade has served as a strong ally during both world wars.

He articulated the UK’s interest in fostering a stable and secure Western Balkans, with Serbia playing a pivotal role in that stability.

Lammy highlighted the significant increase in bilateral trade, noting it has quintupled since 2010, and mentioned a new memorandum of understanding that aims to support increased investments.

Lammy also offered condolences related to protests in Novi Sad, emphasizing that the UK refrains from intervening in other nations' domestic affairs, maintaining respect for democratic institutions.

He concluded by pointing out the shared interests between the two nations, particularly in sports and cultural exchanges, with further advancements in bilateral relations anticipated in the near future.
