In a significant development within Serbian politics, opposition leader Miroslav Aleksić announced the need for a 'government of people's trust' during a press conference held in the hall of the National Assembly of Serbia.

He emphasized that the current regime has lost its legitimacy, citing a deep societal crisis within the country.

Aleksić, representing the People's Movement of Serbia, asserted that the formation of a transitional government is an urgent necessity, claiming that the government headed by Miloš Vučević effectively ceased to operate on November 1, coinciding with a fatal incident in Novi Sad.

A sense of disillusionment among the Serbian populace was highlighted, with Aleksić stating that a large majority now lacks confidence in state institutions due to misleading information disseminated over the past four months regarding various issues, including student demands and anti-corruption measures.

He noted the unprecedented scale of public protests across Serbia, with massive demonstrations undertaken in Belgrade, deemed the largest in the country's history.

Aleksić pointed to incidents of violence during protests, specifically mentioning an occurrence on March 15 when police were allegedly seen standing alongside masked individuals instead of protecting citizens.

He criticized the government's inability to ensure public safety and to conduct free and fair elections.

The opposition views the formation of the government of people's trust as critical, aiming to address urgent societal needs and provide a structure until legitimate elections can be conducted.

Co-chair of the Green-Left Front, Biljana Đorđević, detailed the intended mandate of this transitional government, which would last no longer than nine months and focus on fulfilling student demands and establishing conditions for credible elections.

Đorđević stated that achieving free elections requires a comprehensive overhaul of the electoral register and laws to prevent past abuses and ensure transparent reporting.

She further called for an end to the misuse of state resources in favor of the ruling coalition led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

Regarding the composition of the proposed government, Đorđević indicated that opposition parties, social movements, and academic institutions would collaboratively nominate candidates.

She specified that the appointee for Prime Minister would need to be a non-partisan figure agreed upon by all stakeholders, emphasizing that critical portfolios must not remain under the control of the current regime.

This initiative is presented as a call for broad public consensus to restore trust in state institutions, inviting participation from various segments of society, including the academic community and civil society.

Đorđević stressed that the success of such a government hinges on substantial public support.

The notion of a transitional government has sparked debate, particularly concerning the potential unwillingness of the ruling authority to accept such a proposal.

Đorđević referenced recent remarks made by President Aleksandar Vučić, indicating a shift in rhetoric regarding the opposition’s calls.

Moreover, she underlined that student assemblies and plenums being formed independently could coexist and support the initiative for a transitional government, indicating a collaborative path despite any absence of representatives from certain opposition parties during the conference.

The proposed government would seek to create a conducive atmosphere for transparent elections following verification of compliance with all stipulated conditions.
