Serbia and Hungary to Advance Energy and Military Cooperation

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announces completion of oil pipeline project and strengthens ties with Hungary.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced today that he is soon to meet with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to continue the strategic collaboration between the two nations on vital issues.

During a joint press conference with Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Vučić revealed plans to complete the project for a new oil pipeline from Aljža to Novi Sad by the end of the third quarter of this year, with construction anticipated to start in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Details of the pipeline project indicate an estimated cost of approximately €129.5 million.

Vučić emphasized that this initiative would enhance Serbia's energy diversification by providing an additional oil supply route alongside the existing JANAF pipeline.

The completion of this pipeline is slated for the first quarter of 2027, which Vučić claims could offer more cost-effective options for oil procurement from various sources.

Vučić reassured that Serbia has established itself as a reliable gas supplier, noting the uninterrupted flow of gas through its territory to Hungary.

He expressed confidence in Hungary's role as a dependable partner in energy matters.

Beyond energy, the leaders discussed plans for deeper military collaboration, intending to foster trust and improve relations between Serbian and Hungarian military forces.

Vučić referenced numerous joint activities anticipated, including military training and exercises, peacekeeping operations, cybersecurity initiatives, military education, and medical training.

Specific training operations will utilize military training grounds in both Hungary and Serbia, including sites such as Sombor and Batajnica in Serbia and Kecskemét in Hungary.

The Serbian President acknowledged Hungary's excellent infrastructure which will be beneficial for helicopter training exercises.

Furthermore, Vučić noted the significant growth in trade relations, with a recorded exchange of €3.03 billion in the previous year.

He highlighted that Serbian exports to Hungary have increased by 5.6 times since 2012, while imports have also risen by 2.3 times over the same period.

Hungary has evolved into Serbia's fifth-largest trading partner from thirteenth.

Vučić expressed satisfaction with the deepening economic ties, insisting that this growth serves the interests of citizens in both countries.

In closing, he conveyed gratitude to the Hungarian government for its unwavering support for Serbia, affirming that Hungary could always count on Serbia’s assistance, regardless of the circumstances.
